Is there anything that keeps the Deuter KC III from collapsing...

By Ranked #251 - Kids' Gear May 4, 2010

Is there anything that keeps the Deuter KC III from collapsing with the child in it? I also own the Kelty FC 3.0 which has a feature that keeps the child compartment from collapsing when in use. If I were to slip and fall on my back with the Deuter KC III, it seems like there is nothing to keep the carrier from collapsing, and my weight will more than likely squish my child causing severe injury or death. This is a valid safety concern since most hiking trails are not flat, and slipping on a downhill and falling on your back in not unlikely. Am I missing something with the Deuter KC III?

The Kelty FC 3.0 has a cross bar (regulated by straps) that keeps the child compartment open. There are two straps that you are supposed to tighted before placing the child in the carrier. These straps, when loosened, allow the carrier to collapse for storage, and when tightened, prevent the carrier from collapsing (folding flat) with a child in it. The child will not be squished unless the metal frame bends or the straps break. The Deuter KC III does not seem to have this safety feature.

What do you mean collapsing? I have used the Kelty and did not see anything that would protect the child if I fell using it.
