The XP2 has the wide angle lens to switch between a long distance spot light, or a flood light for proximity lighting . It also has an extended run time and a whistle, just in case you need to attract attention, or put fido in his place.

Found info that conflicts on run time. Mine shows the XP actually has a longer run time at maximum (80 hrs. vs. 55) and 20 hrs. longer on the "economy" setting (160 hrs. vs. 140). The biggest difference I think is the structure. The XP has a single, high-powered LED and 1 single Red and the Plus 2 has the standard Petzel 4 LED setup. The main plus being the distance you can get from focusing the single beam vs. the diffused 4. The XP can reach almost double the Plus 2 on max (60 meters vs. 35) which gives it a spotlight effect that might be necessary for certain activities...like search & rescue, night trail running or (my personal fave) blinding a black bear you've managed to stumbled on while playing a drinking game in the dark. Think that about summs it up.
