with the sea to summit 5 foot lockable tie downs using them on a hullavator thule rack and wilderness kayak I would have a foot of strap left over. Local people have been telling me I should go ahead and get the 8 foot ones. Do you see why? Seems like it would be too much to tuck away and they will not just close in my truck door like some people do.

Personally, I like to have more than a foot or two of extra strap so that there's no question in my mind whether I got enough leverage to keep whatever I rigged in place exactly as I left it.
