Are the Goats good for your not-so-average east-coast explorer/adventurer who gets away from the groomers and finds trees and pow stashes and cliffs wherever he can? or are there better options out there in terms of not-overly-massive-but-still-massive-enough planks?

I would think you'd want to look at the Mantra's for east coast skiing. Not quite as wide, but a stiff ski without the rocker that will perform just as well when you don't get snow for a few days...or weeks.
