I am planning on using this pack for both as a 4 day winter ski mountaineering pack and a 7 day summer trek pack. For winter use will a helmut fit through the top opening? I get the impression it it a smaller and odd shaped opening. Any of you used this pack for winter use?
ADDING ANOTHER QUESTION?
Yeh I know that will be streaching the voloum but I get a bigger pack and I'll just fill it up. Gotta draw the line somewhere. And, I tend to pack pretty tight and light.
Question. Will the front spandex type pocket hold an avy shovel?

I ended up going with the Ariel 75, the 72L IS PERFECT if packed correctly. For full winter gear though 4nights out, you might be hard pressed to fit all you need for a mountaineering trip; with skis lashed outside they will limit your stuffability in the main compartment I would think. I have a 1.5 man light winter tent, a Marmot Pinnacle bag (15 deg. 800fil) plus the puffy clothing and big cooking system for the cold, shovel, two pads etc. That load fits just right for 2 nights, but beyond that it might get dicey. If you can make it work though, more power to ya. The versatility and comfort of this pack line is simply awesome!
