Clemente, I have seen this style of lacing on snowboard boots, and It's beefy. You're not going to damage the cables, my concern would be with the ratcheting mechanism. However, a little bit of research found this: http://www.vasque.com/vasque-boot-technology/vasque-brand-technology-boa They state that the cable and the mechanism are both covered under warranty for the lifetime of the product. Of course, if you deduced that the mechanism has failed AFTER the river has claimed your shoe... It might be difficult to claim said warranty. Food for thought, I hope this helps a little.
