Would this work as a backpack to carry work clothes (a dress shirt, a pair of jeans and undershirt and some other small items) while running 5 miles to work?

Vidyut, 30 litres is actually a perfect fit your needs in a pack. You may even have some extra room. In that case the Terra pack provides really good compression to not have the extra floppage. The air-mesh panel will help it breathe for running too. Since you won't really need the sleeping bag compartment, you could keep wet clothes or anything you needed to be separate in their.
