By Ranked #1255 - Men's Technical Shells March 23, 2010

hi,

i've a question about lenght of chin of this jacket. these lenght in model for example marmot exum, marmot alpine or rab latok alpine and other models have very long this chin, until the nose. but mentor jacket hasn't this too much as i can see. I am affraid that in winter this chin will be insufficient to protect the face until nose. what are your experiences on this issue ?

regards

I know that outdoor research has to offer balaclava, baclava etc. However, technical jacket, as seen in the competition, other brands, should be solid protection to the face of the nose (inclusive). mentor model is a very solid position, has excellent reviews, but the only thing that holds me back from purchasing it is just incomplete protection of the face, chin. I do not mean at this point the thermal protection of the face, what is the balaclava, but with protection against snow, rain, hail during the storm. Polartec, which is made balaclava will be dampened much faster than Pro Shell membrane. rab Latok Alpine is a great model, I look back on it too. thanks for your answers.

If it cold and/or windy enough to need full chin and nose coverage, than you should be using a high performance balaclava like OR's windstopper full balaclava. Relying on a shell to keep your face warm isn't going to do a whole lot by itself. The chin protection should supplement whatever insulation and/or headgear you are using as your primary means of face protection.
