Ok I just bought Patagonia's Stretch Ascent this winter and it I have to say it rocks. Now I'm seeing this new product and noticing that the pictures are similar (and by similar I mean I can't find any differences) and the specs are very close (Torrentshell seems to be about 3oz lighter I think). Seeing as how the winter hardshell lists at over twice the price, could anyone offer a performance comparison to explain the differences? Just trying to keep Patagonia honest here...

The difference in these two is the fabric, and what the coat is designed to put up with. The Stretch Ascent is designed to take a beating and keep on trucking. It falls in the category of "technical shell" and suggested use is Alpine climbing. Where as the Torrent is the "rain jacket" category and is designed for large amounts of water, but prob wouldn't hold up well around the equipment that is used for alpine climbing. The rip-stop nylon can handle a lot..but doesn't fair well with sharp objects. So could you use this for a ski shell..sure, but I don't recommend it and if it didn't last long, I wouldn't be surprised.
