If you pack carefully you won't exceed 50lbs. I used a combination of vaccum compression bags and cubes to fit 10 days worth of clothes and accessories for a ski trip in Japan. I was not hit with an overweight or oversize charge on JAL. The material is very sturdy and it still looks brand new after lugging it through 4 airports and multiple train stations. It does take some thought and planning if you want to keep your belongings organized as things can shift in the cavernous compartment. The XL is very large. It is not very practical for short trips.

Hi Don - I have never been hit with oversized charges with the XL when flying. The issue that I normally run into is that it is hard to keep the weight of a fully loaded XL below weight restrictions (50-70 pounds depending on carrier). I have been finding going with 2 smaller duffels (like larges), keeps me below weight on a single duffel instead of trying to get it all in 1. If you aren't loading the XL with super heavy gear, I think you will be fine. Hope this helps
