I'm sure if you pack light you can avoid taking it off. Use the compression straps.

Take the pack off. The general consensus at any of the resorts I've been too is the same, most make it mandatory.

You'd probably be most comfortable taking it off unless it was pretty close to empty. However, this is how I feel about most packs...they just tend to push me too far forward for comfort.
