Would the medium be too large for a 5'2" woman. ..And how does one *do* a propper torso measurement, anyway? Do I start at my shoulders and end at my tailbone?

You measure (or rather, have someone else measure, so you get a good measurement) from your C7 vertebrae (the one that sticks out the most at the base of your neck) down to the top of your iliac crest, or hip bones. If you have your friend hold the tape, and you place your hands on top of your hip bones, sticking out, then your friend can usually make a pretty good measurement.
