I used the Hardrock 08s for a couple thousand miles of backpacking last year. I got about 500 miles out of a pair, they weren't visible worn out, not much treadwear, but they got too soft underfoot and I felt every rock.
I found the 08 heel to be snug, while the toebox had almost too much room. I used a size 10.
I need shoes for similar hiking this year. My questions are:
1. Can I likely get 500 miles of a pair of 09s? I realy hate feeling pointy things underfoot, so that's my wearout point.
2. How does the fit in the heel vs. toebox compare to 08?
3. I tried on a pair of Mountain Masochists, and loved the fit, especially the comfort of the upper part, how would those compare to the Hardrock in terms of durability and underfoot protection? The one issue I had with the MM was that the arch support, plus the arch support of my Spenco insoles was just too prominent.
Many thanks for any feedback.

Len. We have a new shoe coming out this spring called the AT Plus. Check out montrail.com for a view of it and know that it should be on the Backcountry.com site soon. It is very similar to the older Hardrock '08 in terms of support and may be just the ticket for the backpacking you describe. The Montrail 'fit' is considered to be snug in the heel, just right through the mid-foot, and a slightly more roomy toe box. You'll find these characteristics in most of our shoes. If you liked the fit of the Mountain Masochists I would say that you will probably like the fit of the AT Plus. The Masochist is built on the VEL last and is slightly narrower, asymmetrical for speed, and does not have as much protection as your old Hardrocks. The AT Plus is built on the ULT last which has a little more room, has similar protection, and will probably fit similar to the Hardrock '08. I hope this info helps!
