How long do you think a filter will last me? I'm doing the AT this summer and want to know if I need to get a replacement cartridge or two.

The filter is rated at 1500 liters, but if the water you put into the filter is clean of most particulate it will last much longer than that. If the water you are gathering is filled with sediment simply use a bandana to prefilter it. If you want to finish the AT, don't carry 2 extra filters. If the filter fails you will be able to find one along the trail. Just about every town you come accross will have an outfitter, and they all carry high end name band gear. I would carry a chemical treatment as a backup, and always backflush the filter element.

The estimated cartridge life is 1500 liters but this all depends on the quality of water you're filtering. As far as the AT is concerned, I'd take along @ least two extra filter elements especially if you're planning on doing the entire trip in one shot.
