I want to take my lab river floating with us, he is a water boy for sure, but will this be sufficient to fight current and fatigue? I will have a rope lead of course, but just a little paranoid.

It should be sufficient. We use this on our lab in pretty heavy currents during our floats. The important part is getting the right size, so the natural swimability is not hindered. Of course, I would not take your dog anywhere you are unfamiliar with the water--just as a precaution.
