i work for TNF and we got bored one day and did the math out... The medium is either one inch too tall or one inch too long for an overhead compartment if it's overstuffed. with a normal load in it, it fits exactly.

I rock the large everywhere I go and always carry on. I don't however pack it full all the time so medium might be better, but I do love that bag.

from reading other reviews it seems people have been able to carry on a Medium if it was not packed to the max. hope that helps
