I was considering getting these for cross-country skiing. I am 5'10" and 165 lbs. If I get the mediums would I be able to get a thin base layer under them or should I get large instead?

CW-X is really not designed to put a base layer under. These are skin tight and should be used as your base layer. They are actually quite warm especially for cross country skiing. Based on your size you should get the medium and it will be perfect. Since they are skin tight you will be able to put your usual base layer OVER the CW-X and it works like a charm! You will stay warm and toasty with this method...
