You have to fill it up with butane first because it should be almost empty when you get it out of the box.

You may want to check that no debris got into the lighter. If there is something insulating the piezo from making a spark, that would definitely give you problems. Try using some compressed air to blow it out, don't use your breath to try to blow it out as moisture from you might make matters worse. Is there gas flowing when you have the trigger depressed?
