Is the outer material of this jacket like a true softshell? You know, like thick and soft? Or is it that thin almost crinkly material like they make their parkas out of?

All of the grey material (underarms, sides, lower sleeves) on the jacket is a nylon windbreaker material (think krinkly wind pant type material). The rest of the material is of a softshell material.

Whether something is a softshell isn't defined by whether the material feels "soft" or not, its more of concept on how you dress yourself for variable conditions. But this jacket is made out of a softer durable material like you are looking for, not like the nylon on a typical parka.
