What is this K2 climbing skin you speak of? "Tip and tail holes let you attach K2 climbing skins without clipping them over the skis edges "
Is K2 making ski specific skins that attach via holes rather than the traditional tip loop / tail hook?

Yes, K2 is now making climbing skins to fit their Backcountry line of skis. The only place I've been able to find them so far is at the Marmot retail store in Bellevue, WA. The front of the skin has a pin that fits specifically in the pre-cut hole on the Backcountry line of skis (remove the plug). The back of the skin has a bracket that also fits in the hole on the back of the ski. I priced a pair for my K2 Coombacks...$170. Ouch.
