The average depth of a body under the snow pack in an avalanche is 3 to 3.5 feet or approximately 100 centimeters meters. The Ortovox 240cm should function just fine. The real usefulness of a probe will be dependent on whether the person buried under the snow has a beacon, and that you have a beacon in search mode--nearly any probe over 200cm works when everyone in the party has a beacon.

If you ski in an area with a snowpack deeper than 240cm on a regular basis I recommend getting a longer length probe....
