Dave, ACTUALLY, according to backcountry's specifications this jacket has 120G of insulation while TNF MODULATION jacket has only 60G and, BOTH jacket come with a snow skirt.

If you do go with this jacket, I'd recommend sizing up for layering. That's what I do (I like to be able to wear a hoodie or sweater underneath coats and jackets) and the fit was exactly what I wanted.

Hi Paula - I would recommend checking out The North Face Modulation Jacket - it is very similar to the Insulated Varius Guide - both waterproof, same amount of insulation, similar price- but the Modulation has more ski specific features like a snow skirt and interior pockets for goggles etc. - Similar jackets, but the Modulation was designed as a more ski friendly piece. Hope this helps-
