What is the difference between the Medium and Large? I found the hat size chart on the patagonia site but does it apply to this piece? is the large longer or is the head-circumference different between the two???

Neil, the large R1 Balaclava is slightly longer, and has a bigger head circumference as well. The hat sizing chart is fairly accurate for this too.
