what is the best way to apply water proofing to these? heat them up in the oven for a few minutes then apply? Do i need to worry about getting leather balm on the non leather parts of the glove?

The leather balm is just a conditioner not a waterproofing. i wouldn"t heat the gloves too much room temp is just fine maybe warm the balm up a little to make it easier to apply. This glove does have a waterproof membrane , but to keep the leather palms from soaking out try some Nikwax glove proof.

For my Hestra Gloves, I always apply after leaving the gloves near a heater in my house for a little while to make sure that they are warm/room temperature, but not too hot. Don't worry about getting the the waterproofing on the synthetic parts of the glove, it will just make it more water repellent. I usually re-apply the leather balm and/or waterproofing 1/2 way through the season to keep the leather in good shape.
