I've been wearing SmartWool as my primary baselayer for both upper and lower body. Recently, I've noticed small holes appearing in all of my SmartWool garments, which I recently saw someone on the boards attribute to machine drying the garments. I like my performance clothes, especially the baselayers, to be easy care for the most part, meaning I can wash and dry them without worry. I know that the Capilene is not wool, however I want to be sure not to have to worry about lots of runs through the washer and dryer damaging the clothes. Has anyone ever had any problem with this?

One of Capilene's attributes over wool is definitely it's great durability. Definitely machine dryable and will last forever like mentioned below. However don't discount Capilene as that much cooler than wool. There are definitely some wool pieces that are warmer than Capilene, but this Capilene 4 bottom is very very warm!

I've been wearing Capilene for 5 or 6 years now and still have some of my original shirts, back when they were silk, light, med, and expedition weights. I haven't had any issues with them wearing out or getting holes. The Cap 4 will start to pile up a bit after a while, but it is much more durable than wool. Keep in mind that the Capilene won't be as warm as a wool layer, so they aren't substitutes for each other.
