I'm also 5'9"and 145 pounds and I wear a medium in the jacket, so I'd recommend a medium on that basis. It's a little loose-fitting, enough to get a few layers underneath and not restrict motion, so if that's what you're going for then go for medium. If you want it closer to skin with just a light baselayer, a small is probably a better option. Hope that helps.
