Trying to decide between the R3 and the R4 patagonia fleece for my wife. Which would you recommend for the best balance between warmth and breathability. Also, what is the difference between the R4 and the R4 Lightweight? My wife will be using this jacket as a stand alone jacket and as a warm, breathable midlayer under shell for skiing.

from your description I think the R3 Jacket is the best fleece for you wife. It's very warm, and still offers good breathability for layering. The two R4 fleeces are both windproof, and very warm on their own. The R4 is a fuzzier, warmer fleece, and the lightweight R4 has the same windproof membrane, but a lighter fleece, and breathable R1 fabric under the arms w/ no windproofing.
