How bulky is this jacket? I returned the Alpha SV because it was too bulky and I wanted a slimmer fitting jacket, but still with enough room underneath for a fleece or down sweater.

What you should look at if you want the slimmest, most packable Arc'teryx jacket, in Gore Pro-Shell, is the Alpha LT or Beta LT. This Beta AR will be a bit lighter than an Alpha SV because it uses less of the super tough fabric and has a slightly shorter cut. The LT versions are significantly lighter, more packable and have a softer feel. For reference on the Arc'teryx naming scheme: SV-severe, AR-all 'round, LT-light. Don't worry though, they are still sized for layering, tough, technical and equally well built.
