That's not actually carbon, but is instead high-strength plastic doing just about nothing. On some mounts, that plastic may be removed if it hinders the mount. It's just aesthetic. Recent dynafit models have a metal-reinforced crampon attachment point just behind the toe, and the binding is designed to be compatible with the crampon, w/ and w/o the middle strip.
