oops... 'forgot to answer half of the question... it has a light, loft insulation and is'nt terribly heavy at all

The hood will be a great layer of protection and another way to contain heat that would otherwise radiate off the top of the head. With a good knit hat, it shoudl be a great system to help keep warm
