Two questions:
1)It's not the 18/8 steel that's got me worried about flavor remembrances, it's the polypropylene-- does the top part get da funk? How much more likely is that part to grow microbial friendlies than the rest of the bottle?
2)I assume this is compatible with the Katadyn Hiker water filter, but I'd hate to assume too much. Anyone know for sure?

The top part has been fine. Although PP, it's been quite durable and if it's kept clean it won't get any of da funk. It will be most common to find bacteria in the seam between the plastic threaded top and the metal of the bottle itself, as there will always be small openings and cracks. That's easily remedied with a good hot water washout every so often. I'll do mine maybe once a week, some people will recommend every day. The only trouble I've had with this bottle is that in fairly cold weather (sub 20F) the flat o-ring inside the cover will stick to the threaded half, but that could be taken care of with a small amount of glue. Overall it is sturdy and has a very solid feel, it also insulates beverages fairly well. With regard to the Katadyn filter, I have no idea.
