Scott, The R3 and the Retro X are going to be similar in warmth, but the Retro X is is windproof, so when things get nasty it will be the warmer piece, but the R3 is no slouch in cold weather on its own. If you're going to layer either underneath a shell from time to time the R3 would be the better jacket since it handles heat and moisture so well.
