My husband wants a rain jacket to wear alone or over his Patagonia down sweater when its colder. So far I'm deciding between this Storm Light Jacket and the Rain Shadow. Keeping in mind that he might wear this alone OR over the down sweater, is the Storm Light a better choice? Or the Rain Shadow? Are there other options I should consider?

Go rain shadow if you're going over a down sweater

I think the Rain Shadow might be a better piece to layer over the Down Sweater. The Storm Jacket is designed to be a more complete jacket on it's own, while the Rain Shadow is slightly more technically oriented.

To a certain degree this is going to be a matter of opinion. In my opinion the Storm Light is a better way to go because of the lining and extra pockets. That is an especially important feature if he'll wear the jacket without a lot of layering. Just to keep your options open you might look at some of the shells made by backcountry.com like the Stoic eVent or the Stoic 2.0. Check out the outlet. I'm a huge fan of them. The performance is second to none! Hope that helps.
