Can you get the lower part (unzipped part) off over hiking boots or do you have to take off your hiking boots?

They have a side zipper on each leg and I had no problems getting them off over my hiking boots. Once removed, the legs fold up to about the size of a large pack of gum and fit nicely in the small pockets of my pack.
