What is the fit like on this jacket? My chest measures about 43.5" and I wear 16.5 x 36 dress shirts. Would a large or extra large be best? Would be nice to layer underneath the jacket but also don't want it to fit like a tent if worn on its own.

I'm not quite your size (my chest is around 41, my shirt size 15.5/35) and the size medium fits me close to the body. The jacket has a fairly narrow athletic cut, with just enough room under to comfortably layer my montbell ultralight down inner jacket (also a size medium.) I'd likely recommend the large, try it out, and you can always exchange for the XL if need be, backcountry's return/exchange process is simply fantastic. good luck, cheers!
