I've never tried a pair of approach shoes; I'm wondering, are they intended to be worn barefoot like regular climbing shoes or will they fit and function appropriately with socks?

Beware of this shoe. It is not as sticky as other approach shoes. So if you are looking to rock scramble or do easy climbs in it, I would look elsewhere.

they fit and function with socks -they are basically a light hiker with sticky rubber. i suppose you could go barefoot, but sometimes an approach can be a multi hour hike, so socks are critical for wicking and blister prevention, not to mention eliminating bad smell.
