If I buy baby powder will that keep my hands dry the same as climbing chalk? I am 95% sure that it would but I'm not certain what the makeup of the chalk is..

That's exactly right Sam. Baby powder will keep your hands very dry but it does make them slick!

No. climbing/gymnastic chalk is Magnesium carbonate, which is super drying and abrasive. Baby powder (Talcum powder and corn starch) will make glue on your hands, and probably be slick.
