Pretty soon I'll be taking a trip to Alaska in mid winter to see the Iditarod and I am wondering if this would be a good jacket, anyone know if this is good for Alaskan winters?

It would be good but not as good as a parka. Parkas are longer so it will help trap in more body heat. I would look for the Canada Goose expedition parka and if you really want to be warm the Snow Mantra parka from Canada Goose.
