I see that the 13 inch MacBook fits in perfectly but would a 15 inch MacBook Pro work as well?

The 13 inch plastic and Aluminum fit very snug in the shovel pocket. I did a test and found that the 15inch pro fits in the main compartment very well but not in the shovel compartment. The main compartment offers more protection anyways.
