With this stove, for cold weather conditions, isn't it just possible to invert the canister and have liquid fuel go straight through the burner?

The problem isn't the flow, but the expansion of the semi-gas state to rarefied gas in order for it to burn efficiently. At colder temperatures the liquid expands at a lower pressure. The hose helps in the expansion, as it is a larger volume than the small chamber in the canister-top style stoves. Liquid stoves use a built-in atomizer and a manual pump to build air pressure, so they work at any temperature pretty much.
