is the zipper in front of the main compartment for a front compartment or the "top" compartment? i thinks the specs are mistaken

You are correct, there are two 'front' compartments, the second one just being slightly smaller. The 'top' compartment is very small, and lies just behind the main front compartment. And each front compartment has it's own internal mesh compartment. Hope this helps.
