As a beginner this would be the perfect belaying device. It is not only my top choice but it’s a great price. I know as a beginner this gear can get expensive quick, but just remember your safety and your life are not to be put in the hands of cheap gear, and I can guarantee The Black Diamond ATC-XP is not cheap gear.

This is a great device for a beginner, easy to use and grips skinny ropes well.
