I learned the hard way... do not wash your good backpacks in the washing machine. My favorite TNF pack got a whole in it because a buckle was rubbing against the fabric during the spin cycle. If you could turn it inside out, it may be possible.

The high speed spinning of a washing machine can cause the urethane coating to separate from the inside of the pack. I know this from experience because I ruined one of my favorite North Face packs by washing it in a machine

I would not suggest machine washing a day pack there is too much potential for the straps and things to catch on the agitator and being damaged. A front loading comercial washer might work. But the safest bet would be just to hand wash it in a sink or tub.
