do these slide on the bar or do they clamp on. In other words would I have to take off my bike holders and bars to slide these on or can I put them on and off as I need simply?

No you will not need to slide these onto the bar. Just place them were you want them, then tighten the bolt. Installation instructions are available at: http://www.thuleracks.com/instructions/503.pdf
