Down becomes nearly useless as an insulator if you allow it to get wet, while synthetic retains insulation qualities when wet. The trade off (there's always trade offs) is that synthetics are usually heavier and pack bulkier. Want the lightest, easiest packing bag? A down bag with 800 or better fill is your choice. Just be sure you keep it dry!

Down: •offers more warmth per weight, meaning a down 15° bag will weight less than a synthetic 15° bag •less bulky, can be packed down to a smaller size •cost more •last much longer •some people are allergic •pain in the ass to clean properly Synthetic: •bags dry faster, making them a better choice for wet climates •will eventually "deflate", the insulation gets matted down with use, affecting its ability to insulate properly •cost less •pretty easy to clean I'm sure I've forgotten some points, but hopefully this can help you make your decision!
