I have a stock Giant OCR2 from 2006 (I think), 105 components. It has a 3 sprocket crank. Someone told me that changing to a 2 sprocket would make for better shifting, and that I could go down to a 2 with no modifications. Is that true, and would this work? Would I need anything else?

Not completely true. 1st, if you change to this particular crankset you will need to get a matching bottom bracket. 2nd, you might be able to tune the front derailleur to shift a double instead of a triple but it will not be very smooth or consistent, you would be better off getting a front derailleur for a double instead. 3rd, your current rear derailleur is a long cage model which is used to handle the longer chain req'd by triples. Running a double would shorten the chain and cause your current derailleur to not function properly.
