Anyone know if this version is better than the last version? The shoulder strap on the old one tore the inside seams when it was fully loaded and the "cooler" tended to leak once the ice started melting.

Yes, the hand straps are great but the shoulder strap connects (at least in the old version and looks the same in this version) right in the top corner where the side pockets meet with the larger middle pocket, the interior wall ripped from the seam. It's just not as durable as the exterior but has to hold some of the force of the shoulder starp. It's not a major issue just, more cosmetic than anything. If you've got it loaded down and want to use the shoulder strap, keep an eye on how much it's pulling at that seem. And yeah one of those blue ice things would probably do fine.

did you have the last version? this bag looks sweet! but you're comments concern me a bit....is there too much focus on the strap connection points? is that why the seams started to tear? also for the cooler part i would think that the re-freezable fake ice would alleviate that problem....
