Are the pants still comfortable and maneuverable when there are things in the side zip pockets, say a compass or map or notebook? I ask as am used to large protruding leg pockets like on the MH Mesas rather than this style. Thanks.

you'd probably be better off with something else. the pockets aren't too big.
