Thanks to Victor for the handy reply! Are the pants still comfortable and maneuverable when there are things in the side zip pockets, say a compass or map or notebook? I ask as am used to large protruding leg pockets like on the MH Mesas rather than this style. Thanks.

Yes, quite comfortable still. I generally have them weighed down with stuff and never notice it, though you might notice without a belt or something to hold them up. There not cargo pockets so there's nothing protruding out on the front.
