Here's how I plan to use this jacket--which I got for 60% off--short to longish canoe trips in MT, AK and MN; and bike commuting. An occasional random hiking trip here and there. Is this piece overkill? I got such a fantastic deal on this site that I couldn't pass it up...

I wouldn't say so. It's very light weight, super packable, water proof, and breathable. Looks like a great rain/all around jacket to me.
